It's no secret. We love Mother Earth. Without her marvelous atmosphere we wouldn’t have the warm glow of the sun, the refreshing water in the pool or the fresh produce that goes into our favorite foods and even some of our drinks.
This is exactly why we have countless Earth Week events, prizes and fun planned. Starting April 17, we’ll be putting planet earth first, raising awareness among guests and employees by focusing on the many issues facing our dear Mother along with some the simple ways we can help her out.
To start, all week long guests can enjoy sipping on the High Society cocktail from Spiked, which is made with fresh, organic blood oranges from Stehly Farm, located right here in Valley Center, California. Not only will you find this citrus drink refreshing and delicious, but you will be helping us support small businesses and organic farming.
Once you’ve got your locally sourced libation in hand, we encourage you to participate in our various promotions featuring earth-friendly prizes all week long. Participate and you’ll have a chance to win a freshly sprouted plant, a reusable water bottle, energy saving light bulbs and much more.
If you’re planning to visit us Saturday, April 23, make sure to participate in our CodeGreen Drawing. Guests will have a chance to win even more eco-friendly goodies, plus one lucky winner will walk away with $20,000 in cash—everyone’s favorite kind of “green!” See the Promotions desk for more information on how to enter.
We know it wouldn’t be right to ask our guests to go green without doing the same. Every teammate, from the front desk to the casino floor, will be a part of the Earth Week push!
Our teammate focused Earth Week activities begin on Monday, April 18. We’ll be putting our pedals where our mouths are with “Ride to Save the Planet.” The Harrah’s Resort SoCal Teammate Bike Club will be riding around in Oceanside to promote a healthy lifestyle and a healthy planet.
Thursday, April 21 will feature an on property E-Waste Collection event where teammates can safely recycle their old electronics. In 2015 we collected over 8,000 pounds of e-waste, and we’re hoping to beat that number this year! This recycling program keeps toxic materials out of landfills while conserving other natural resources.
Earth Week wraps up on April 23 with our Creek to Bay Beach Clean Up. Our teammate volunteers will generously donate their time to help tidy up our two adopted sites, the shores of Lake Wohlford here in Valley Center and Buccaneer Beach in Oceanside. Because a clean planet is a healthy planet.
While we love Earth Week, Harrah’s Resort SoCal is a green property 365 days of the year. Through our CodeGreen program, we conserve energy by using our own solar power, recycle hundreds of tons of materials each year and continue to find inventive ways to protect the planet. Check out some of our energy saving statistics below and make sure you’re keeping up with all of the posts on our GIVING page to discover all the ways we are going “green.”
Our 4056 solar panels are on 5.5 acres. The solar array is designed to produce 1.1 Megawatts per year. We save roughly $300k per year in energy costs since commissioning our solar field.
Since 2009 we have generated 11,858,912 kilowatt-hours of electricity. This is the same as…
- Keeping 1,722 cars off the road
- Preventing 920,145 gallons of gasoline from being used
- And stopping 2,931 tons of waste from reaching the landfill each year.
In 2015 alone our CodeGreen program:
- Generated 113,986 kWh solar energy, which equals 450 trees planted or the CO2 from 90 tons of burning coal
- Decreased water usage by 2.5% and saved roughly 2.3 million gallons
- Increased recycling by 10.5% and diverted 468 tons of material
- Switched 90% of lightbulbs to LED and saved more than $746,000 in electricity
